The ninth house covers long journeys, higher study, belief and the search for meaning — everything that requires going some distance, literally or otherwise.

It pairs with the third house as an axis. The third is the near environment and everyday mind; the ninth is distance, formal learning and the frameworks somebody uses to make sense of things.

The tradition treats the two as the same faculty at different ranges: information close at hand against understanding that had to be travelled for.

The ninth is frequently described as the house of religion, which narrows it unhelpfully.
