Where The Moon Stood
The sign the Moon occupied at your birth, down to the minute it changed — the private self behind the public one.
Computed in your browser. Nothing you type leaves the page.
The Fastest Placement In The Chart
The Moon crosses a sign in roughly two and a half days, which makes it the quickest-moving body in a chart by a wide margin and the one where a birth hour matters most, after the ascendant.
That speed is the whole reason this calculator exists as something separate. A sun sign follows from a date for nearly everybody. A moon sign follows from a date about two times in three, and on the remaining third the hour decides between two adjacent signs.
Most people never find out which case they are in, because a table cannot tell them. This one can.
What It Does With A Missing Hour
Supply a birth time and the calculation is straightforward: the Moon's position for that moment, computed rather than looked up.
Withhold one and it still answers, using noon as the reference — but it also states whether the Moon crossed a sign boundary at any point during your birth date, and names the precise minute it did.
That second piece of information is the point. It tells you whether the answer you just received is certain or whether it is one of two possibilities, which is a distinction most tools quietly decline to make.
What The Moon Is Assigned
The tradition gives the Moon your emotional baseline: what you need in order to feel settled, what soothes and what unsettles, and how you respond before you have had a chance to compose a response.
It is the private layer. Where the Sun describes what somebody is driving at and the ascendant describes how they arrive, the Moon describes what is going on underneath both — and almost nobody sees it except the people who live with them.
It is frequently the placement that feels uncomfortably accurate on first reading, precisely because it describes the part you do not perform.
Why Yours May Not Match Your Sun
There is no relationship between the two. The Moon completes a full circuit of the zodiac in under a month, so its sign at your birth is effectively independent of the Sun's.
A fire Sun with a water Moon describes somebody visibly driven whose setbacks cost them privately far more than anyone watching would guess. An earth Sun with an air Moon describes somebody methodical in action who needs conversation and ideas to feel settled.
These mismatches are the normal case rather than a complication, and they are usually the reason a sun sign description has always felt approximately right and never quite accurate.
The Astronomy Underneath
The Moon's motion is genuinely difficult to compute. Its orbit is perturbed by the Sun, its speed varies across the month, and a simple average produces errors large enough to put it in the wrong sign near a boundary.
This calculator implements an abridged version of the ELP-2000/82 lunar theory rather than an approximation, which is what makes it able to name the minute of a crossing rather than the day.
The whole calculation runs in your browser. Your birth details are used to compute a result on your own machine and are never transmitted, stored or passed to anyone.
