What a cookie actually is
A cookie is a very small text file that a site asks your browser to keep. On your next visit the browser hands it back, which is how a website can remember that it has seen you before. That is the whole mechanism — it is a note the site leaves for itself, stored on your device rather than ours.
The four kinds in use here
Essential. These make the site function. They remember the cookie choice you made so you are not asked on every page, and they hold a session together. Switching them off would break the thing they are part of, so they cannot be switched off.
Analytics. Where analytics is enabled on zodiacdivine.com, these record which pages are read and how people move between them, so we can tell what is worth writing more of. The result is aggregated and does not pick you out by name.
Advertising. Our advertising partners, Google AdSense among them, set cookies to deliver ads and to make them more relevant. These can follow your browsing across other sites. They belong to the partner rather than to us, and the opt-out links in our Privacy Policy apply to them.
Third-party. Embedded material — a video, a social post — can set cookies from whichever platform supplies it. Those are the platform’s, set under the platform’s rules.
Our calculators do not use them
The star map and the other calculators store nothing in a cookie. They compute in your browser’s memory and forget the moment you navigate away.
Taking control of them
Your browser is the real control panel here, and it outranks us. Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Edge will all let you refuse cookies outright, permit only some, or clear whatever is already stored; each documents it in its own help pages. Clearing the essential ones simply means the site forgets your preferences and asks again.
Do Not Track
Browsers may send a “Do Not Track” header. There has never been an agreed meaning for it and the site does not act on it — we would rather say so plainly than imply a protection that is not there. The commitments in this policy and the Privacy Policy hold regardless of the header.
