Full Moon
Everything shows, including the part being avoided. The full moon is traditionally read as culmination, with feeling sitting nearer the surface than usual.
What This Phase Is Good For
Culmination, honest conversation, seeing what is actually happening
The current phase β this is where the Moon is tonight.
What Is Actually Happening
At full moon the Earth sits between the Moon and the Sun, so the lit face is turned fully toward us. It rises around sunset and sets around sunrise, which is why it is up all night.
The full moon is a specific instant rather than a night, and the Moon is only precisely full for a moment. It looks full for two or three nights either side.
When the alignment is exact enough, the Earth's shadow falls on it and produces a lunar eclipse β which is why eclipses only ever happen at full moon.
How The Tradition Reads It
The full moon is read as culmination: the point where something reaches its height and becomes visible, which the tradition treats as the same event described twice.
It is also read as the phase of completion rather than initiation β what was begun at the new moon becoming apparent, for better or otherwise.
The associated emphasis is on seeing clearly rather than on doing, which is why traditional practice at this phase is more about recognition than action.
Using It Without Overreaching
As a recurring prompt to look at where something has got to, it is a reasonable habit and costs nothing.
What it is not is a reason to expect events, a warning, or a basis for any decision that matters. Nothing here is guidance on health, money or legal matters.
The tradition's claim is symbolic. It does not require anything to actually happen on the night.
On Full Moons And Behaviour
The belief that full moons disturb sleep, behaviour and hospital admissions is widespread and has been studied repeatedly. The studies do not support it.
The better explanation is that people attribute a restless night to the Moon when it happens to be full, and forget the restless nights when it was not. It is the same counting problem that makes repeating numbers seem to follow you.
The tradition's actual claim about the full moon concerns culmination and visibility. That is a symbolic reading and does not require the empirical claim to be true β and keeping the two apart is most of what reading this material well consists of.
Phase Is Not Sign
Every phase page on this site reports two separate facts, and they run on different clocks. The phase is the angle between Moon, Earth and Sun, on a 29.5-day cycle. The sign is the Moon's position along the zodiac, on a 27.3-day cycle.
Because those numbers differ, any phase can occur in any sign. There is no fixed pairing, and this month's full moon in one sign will next year fall in another.
The phase says what kind of moment the tradition considers this to be; the sign says what flavour it carries. Reading them as one statement is the commonest error in lunar material.
Questions About The Full Moon
Does the full moon affect sleep or behaviour? The research does not support it. People remember the bad nights that coincided and forget the ones that did not.
How long is the moon actually full? A moment. It appears full for two or three nights either side.
Why are there not eclipses every month? The Moon's orbit is tilted about five degrees, so the alignment is usually imperfect.
