Dreams of Flying

Readings To Consider

  • One of the few common dreams that is usually pleasant, and often tied to a stretch where something has opened up.
  • Effortless flight reads as freedom; laboured flight reads as progress that costs continuous effort to maintain.
  • Flight that stops working the moment you notice it is a recurring report, read as self-consciousness interrupting something that was going well.
  • It is strongly associated with lucid dreaming, and the enjoyment may come from the sense of control rather than the flying.

No dream has one correct reading. What the image meant to you, and what was unresolved that week, counts for more than any index entry. This page is for thinking with, not for diagnosis.

The One People Want To Keep

Flying is unusual among common dreams in being predominantly pleasant. Most frequently reported themes are anxious ones; this is the reliable exception.

Reports divide fairly consistently into effortless soaring, laboured flight that keeps failing, and flight that works only as long as attention is not directed at it β€” and those three are read quite differently.

The variation is the informative part, as it is with water. Whether flight is easy or effortful tends to matter more than the flying itself.

What The Tradition Holds

Freedom and perspective are the dominant associations: rising above a situation, seeing it whole, being released from something that had been constraining.

Laboured flight β€” struggling to gain height, sinking back, having to work continuously to stay up β€” is read as ambition meeting resistance, or as a situation where progress requires constant effort to maintain.

Flight that stops working when you notice it is a recurring and oddly specific report, and the traditional reading connects it to self-consciousness interfering with something that had been going well unexamined.

Lucidity

Flying dreams are strongly associated with lucid dreaming β€” the state in which somebody becomes aware they are dreaming while it continues β€” and this connection is well documented.

Flight is one of the most commonly reported first deliberate actions once lucidity begins, probably because it is obviously impossible and therefore an immediate test of the state.

This is worth knowing because it partly explains the pleasantness. A flying dream is often a dream in which some degree of control has arrived, and the enjoyment may be coming from the control rather than the flight.

The Absence Of A Physical Explanation

Unlike falling and teeth, flying has no established bodily trigger. There is no well-supported sensation during sleep that reliably produces it.

That makes it one of the cases where the symbolic reading has less competition from a mundane one β€” which is not evidence that the symbolic reading is correct, only that no better explanation is currently available.

Saying so plainly is more useful than manufacturing a confident mechanism, and it is the honest state of the research.

Claims Without Support

Flying dreams do not indicate spiritual advancement, do not predict travel, and are not evidence of anything leaving the body. Those claims circulate widely and have no support.

They also carry no implication about your waking capabilities. A pleasant dream is a pleasant dream.

Nothing here is guidance on health or any other consequential matter, and no dream should be treated as an instruction.

Questions About Flying

Why is flying usually enjoyable when most common dreams are not? Partly because it is frequently associated with lucidity, and the enjoyment may be coming from the sense of control rather than from flight itself.

What does it mean when I cannot gain height? The traditional reading is effort meeting resistance. As always, when it started is more informative than the image.

Does it mean I am having an out-of-body experience? No. There is no evidence for that interpretation.
