What Mercury Is Assigned

Mercury governs thinking, learning and explaining — how information gets in, gets processed and gets back out again.

It is arguably the placement with the most day-to-day practical relevance, because it describes how somebody actually works rather than what they want.

Roughly half of all people have it in a different sign from their Sun, which accounts for a great deal of the sense that a sun sign description is almost but not quite right.

Never Far From The Sun

Mercury is the innermost planet and never appears more than about 28 degrees from the Sun, which puts it in your Sun's sign or in one of the two adjacent ones. Three possibilities, never more.

That narrow range is exactly why it matters. The difference between Mercury in your Sun sign and Mercury one sign over is the difference between thinking that runs with your disposition and thinking that pulls slightly against it.

A Leo Sun with Mercury in Virgo is warm and expansive in manner and unexpectedly precise in analysis, which is a common combination and a confusing one for anybody who has only read about Leos.

Four Ways Of Thinking

Mercury in fire thinks fast and commits early — grasps the shape quickly, bores of detail, comfortable deciding on incomplete information. Mercury in earth thinks concretely and wants specifics, slower to conclude and considerably more reliable once it has.

Mercury in air thinks structurally and comparatively, holds several positions at once and can articulate a view it does not hold. Its failure is treating a well-built argument as settled without testing it.

Mercury in water thinks associatively and reads context, often arriving at an accurate conclusion it cannot immediately justify. Its difficulty is showing the working, because the working was not verbal.

Retrograde At Birth

About one person in five was born during a Mercury retrograde period, and it is a far less alarming fact than it is sometimes made to sound.

The traditional reading is a mind that processes internally before producing anything — slower to give a first answer, frequently more considered by the time it does. People with it often report thinking best in writing.

It describes a style rather than a deficiency, and it has no relation whatever to the transiting retrogrades that get blamed for lost luggage.

The Signs It Governs

Mercury rules both Gemini and Virgo, which is unusual — one air sign and one earth sign, governed by the same body.

The tradition reads this as two modes of the same function: Gemini as information gathered and circulated, Virgo as information sorted and refined.

It is one of the rulerships that survived the discovery of the outer planets unchanged, which is a reasonable indication that the pairing was doing real work.
