Uranus

Uranus is the break with precedent — the impulse away from inherited structure and toward doing it differently. The tradition places it opposite Saturn in function for exactly that reason.

Where It Sits In Your Chart

Uranus spends about seven years in a sign, so it describes a cohort rather than a person. It becomes individual only through its house, a close aspect to a personal placement, or a position on an angle.

What Uranus Is Assigned

Uranus is disruption: sudden change, break with precedent, and whatever a generation refuses to continue doing the way it was done.

It is read as the impulse toward independence and away from inherited structure, which is why the tradition places it opposite Saturn in function.

In an individual chart it describes where somebody is least willing to be constrained — but only where it touches something personal, which is the qualification that matters most on this page.

Generational, Not Personal

Uranus spends about seven years in each sign, so everybody born across that span shares the placement. It is not distinguishing you from your contemporaries.

Reading a generational planet as a personal trait is the commonest structural error in beginner chart work, and it is worth catching early.

Uranus in Libra in the mid-1970s coincides with substantial change in how relationships and marriage were arranged. That is a reading about a cohort, and it is a reasonable one. It is not a description of any individual in it.

When It Becomes Personal

Three specific conditions, and they are the same for all three outer planets.

House placement, which rotates every two hours and is therefore individual even where the sign is not — this requires a birth time. Close aspect to a personal placement, which only a fraction of the cohort will have. And position on an angle, which the tradition weights heavily regardless of speed.

Absent one of those, the sign alone is cohort information and should be read as such.

The First Planet Discovered

Uranus was identified in 1781, the first planet not known to antiquity, and its discovery is what began the reassignment of rulerships.

It was given Aquarius, which Saturn had ruled, and the reasoning was thematic: a planet found rather than inherited, assigned to the sign associated with breaking from precedent.

Whether that reassignment was justified is a genuine disagreement. Traditional astrology continues to use Saturn for Aquarius, and both schemes are current.

Weighting In An Element Count

Because it is shared so widely, Uranus should carry very little weight in an elemental distribution, and a count that treats it equally with the Moon is not measuring an individual.

Our Elemental Weather calculator weights Sun, Moon and ascendant heavily, the personal planets moderately, and the outer three barely at all, for exactly this reason.

That weighting reflects standard practice rather than an invention of ours.

Questions About Uranus

Does my Uranus sign describe me? Only if it sits in a significant house, aspects a personal placement closely, or sits on an angle. The sign alone describes your cohort.

How long does Uranus stay in a sign? About seven years.

Does Uranus rule Aquarius? In modern practice usually yes; traditional astrology keeps Saturn on Aquarius. The disagreement is real.
